History

During centuries, the Mayans occupied the actual territory of Cancun, where you can now find the archaeological site of Ruinas del Rey.

When spanish conquerors arrived to Quintana Roo lands, the Mayapan League had already dissapeared; this fact allowed the growth of independent tribes. The territory of Benito Juárez belonged to the Ecab tribe .Actual Cancun was dedicated to agricultural tasks.

Ecab was the first tribe in actual Quintana Roo that obbeyed the orders from the conqueror Francisco de Montejo. During the colonial period and due to the lack of minery, there only was agriculture activities. The War of Castas or castes (1847-1902) was not significant in this area.

With the creation of the national territory of Quintana Roo in 1902, it began to work the Compaņia Colonizadora, which was situated in actual Leona Vicario territory. It was produced gum and "palo de tinte", which was transported by train to Puerto Morelos and then it was taken to Cozumel to be commercialized abroad.

After World War II the gum production decreased and this area was left without industries until the end of 1960, the world's trend focused on tourism and its importance for the national economy. In 1974 the first hotel was built. During this year, Quintana Roo becomes a state and it was created the county of Benito Juarez, whith former Isla Mujeres territories.

Along this boulevard you can find hotels, malls , beaches , restaurants and also get to Cancun downtown, which starts in km.0 of this road.

To travel further from Cancun, independently, and taking the Federal Route 307 you get to Playa del Carmen 60km south of Cancun, Puerto Morelos 30km or Tulum 120km. Taking the toll highway to Merida, it's possible to get to Chichen Itza (2hours from Cancun) exit in Piste; one suggestion for the way back : stop in Valladolid, a little colonial town which will make you feel closer to colonial mexican roots.

By bycicle - Bycicle rental is not very popular in Cancun. However, there is a bycicle way that runs paralel to the Blvd. Kukulkan , which is interrupted in some sections, that makes bikers to have to descend from their bycicles or to have to circulate in the main road (which is not safe) . It is not recommended to go out from the hotel zone by bycicle, because in Cancun Downtwon there are no special ways for bikes, and the traffic is very heavy.

Public Transport It is possible to move within Hotel Zone and to Cancun Downtown by public bus (camion), they circulate every 2 or 3 minutes all day long and every 8-10 minutes during the night time. It`s safe and cheap to travel by bus. The route starts in Downtown Cancun and covers 20km of the Hotel Zone (both ways) So if you wish to visit downtown restaurants and markets , or simply get out from Cancun luxurious Hotel Zone to know the way of living of mexican locals, a bus trip is a recomendable option.

From the long distance Bus Terminal it is possible to get buses to most of the cities of southeast Mexico, Yucatan, Campeche, Oaxaca, Chiapas ,Veracruz, Tabasco and Mexico City.
